A great weekend with 3 great instructors
May 7-9, 2010

BDB Martial Arts has been a Harris International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school for almost 10 years. It was exciting to have the head of our affiliation Roy Harris for a weekend Jiu-Jitsu camp and also one of his first Black Belts Roy Dean from Bend, Oregon and Rich Martens from Waterville, QC. All three instructors have their own academies and were brought to Calgary just for this event.

It is great to learn from different instructors because they bring in their own BJJ style, tricks and personalities for everyone to learn from. Roy Dean and Rich Martens got to meet for the first time and everyone enjoyed watching the two of them grapple.

As usual, the seminar brought many people out to participate. I think there were about 70 people this time.

Friday night session was instructed by Rich Martens on the guillotine choke from half guard. He showed the basic mechanics of the choke and them led us into many entries we can set up the choke with.

Roy Dean taught the secrets of the armlock. Roy Dean spent many years mastering this one area and the one thing many people noticed at the seminar was how smooth he could transfer into one movement to another.

Roy Harris focused on the straight foot lock. When Roy Harris used to compete he was known and the foot guy because of how often he submitted his opponents with straight foot locks. He showed the mechanics of finishing the foot lock but more importantly all the control positions we can use to finish it.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the seminar. Everyone got a free seminar t-shirt to remind them of the awesome weekend full of information and good times.
